Once made, this recipe will keep almost indefinitely in an airtight container.

 

Makes 600g

 

1 cup plain flour, sifted

1 cup cold water

1/2 cup salt

1 teaspoon vegetable oil

2 teaspoons cream of tartar

1-2 teaspoons food colouring – any colour

OPTIONAL

6-8 drops lavender essential oil

 

How to make

1   Tip all ingredients into a medium sized sauce pan, stir well together before you switch on the heat and start cooking over a gentle to moderate heat.

2   Stir and cook continuously for around 5 minutes until the mixture leaves the sides of saucepan and forms a firm thick ball of play dough. The tip play dough into the bowl of mixer, use the dough hook attachment and mix for 3-4 minutes until all lumps are gone and playd ough is perfectly smooth

3   When cool enough to handle, evenly divide play dough into two or three bowls add at least half a teaspoon of food colouring and mix well in to create a bright, playful colour.

4   Optional – Add and stir in the Lavender essential oil before scraping the finished play dough into a suitably sized airtight container.

5   Cover and allow to cool completely before playing.

 

TIP – As the play dough cooks it will become rough looking and lumpy. Do not worry about this, as the play dough will eventually become smooth after a few minutes in the food mixer.

Lavender essential oil has a soothing, healing quality, its particularly suitable for young children especially if they have any scrapes.
